A Rake’s Progress

An angry Hillary confronts Obama over health care, NAFTA distortions.

February 23, 2008 · 9 Comments

Although Barack Obama pretends to be above the “politics of the past,” he continues to lie to voters about Hillary Clinton’s universal health care proposal and her position on NAFTA. On Saturday Hillary angrily confronted the Obama campaign during a press conference in Cincinnati.

“Enough with the speeches and the big rallies and then using tactics right out of Karl Rove’s playbook. This is wrong, and every Democrat should be outraged,” she said.

Hillary’s campaign had this to say about the latest Obama distortions:

The Obama campaign is distributing two dishonest mailers in Ohio. The first mailer falsely claims that Hillary said NAFTA was a “boon” to the economy. Hillary never said that. The Obama campaign is basing the quote on a 2006 Newsday article that characterized her views this way without any substantiation. In fact, Newsday recently said that the Obama campaign’s use of their article was “misleading.” The Politico called the Obama campaign’s use of the quote “bogus.

The second mailer from the Obama campaign mimics Harry and Louise ads that the health care industry used to scare people into opposing universal health care. The ad claims “Hillary’s health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can’t afford it.”

Here are the facts:

Sen. Obama fails to mention Hillary’s plan cuts costs just as aggressively as Sen. Obama, if not more so.

Hillary’s plan contains more generous subsidiesthan the Obama plan. Noted health expert Ken Thorpe of Emory University concluded that under the Hillary plan, everyone will be able to afford coverage.

The Obama plan leaves 15 million people out, which drives up costs because everyone else ends up subsidizing their emergency care.

Paul Krugman called the mailer “ugly” and “destructive.

Um excuse me, how is this new?

Obama IS above the politics of the past. This is entirely Hillary’s invention.

There is not ONE THING in those fliers that wasn’t in the debate.

    This is just stupidity.

No, Mystic, Obama continues to distort Hillary’s record and her position. This mailing IS new! Get your facts straight before you go mouthing off here. You are worse than Obama.

I was at the news conference in ‘Cincinnati, unfortunately they missed her important point. Showing a united Democratic front as Hillary Clinton has always done, yet continues to cite examples of the last 7 years to refresh voters minds. This is the legitimate and right method to give the American people.
For most of us this is just Too bad Obama does not get it.. Obama fell in line with insurance companies to discredit a superior plan. This will be fodder for McCain to use and it really shows how short sited Obama is.
Hillary is a very strong candidate in Ohio.
If Obama admits to this terrible error in judgement than he could show credibilty..if he continues to attack the best Insurance plan for all Americans than certainly all Americans suffer. Is this what he wants?

Thanks, Clint. I couldn’t agree more. So how long do you think we will have to wait before Obama owns up to his lies?

    Say Good-bye, Hillary.

  • Rake Morgan // February 24, 2008 at 10:12 am

Are you as stupid as you sound, Patrick? Hillary is still in this race, and no matter who wins, Obama and Hillary both need each other to beat McCain.

Barack Obama’s consistently upscale performance over the past few weeks, including the recent win in the Wisconsin primary, seems to have unsettled Hillary Clinton. The former first lady has responded by hinting that the Obama is big on words, but empty on action.

Clinton made the allegation against Obama while speaking to an audience rally at Youngstown, Ohio, the night after she was defeated by Obama in the Wisconsin primary. She told the gathering that the primary campaign is “about picking a president who relies not just on words but on work—on hard work to get America back to work.” She then went on to tell the audience that the “best words in the world are not enough” unless they are matched with action.

    Interesting article and great site.
Something to think over - as in the long run it may help improve your health.
Well I could certainly use it with my current flu symptoms.
    Cheers.
